Remember that those people have integrated Pokemon so much into their own personality that they feel personally insulted if anything bad is being said about Gamefreak. The fact that the games sold well means that they themselves are somehow a good person despite what everyone else is saying. It's not really healthy.

The game is bad, really bad for a Pokémon game. Did I buy the game, yes. Now that I played it I can say it’s bad.

Also everyone knows it was going to sell well. There is no more 3DS and everyone owns a Switch. What did you think was gonna happen. If a mainline Pokémon game was on the Wii when it was popular we’d have triple sales.
