No one thought these games wouldn't sell well at launch. The focus has always been on both long term sales and the future of the franchise. A good example is Last Jedi. It sold well, but damaged Star Wars so badly they'll be reeling from it for years to come.

Maybe because that's exactly what the success of this game is causing? Death of a franchise doesn't mean its literally going to die and no new entries will be made, it means that the franchise will always produce low effort games because its fanbase doesn't know any better not unlike Fifa or CoD.
