>The regional dex sucks
This is another subjective point, and one that has no perfect answer. Some people complained that Hoenn didn't have enough old Pokémon in its dex, some people complained that Sinnoh has too many old ones and kept some of their new ones post-game, some complained that Unova doesn't have any old Pokémon. In other words, someone will be displeased no matter how the dex is. Yet, Sinnoh at least offers you the choice of having two dexes; Platinum greatly raised the regional dex compared to Pearl and Diamond (59 Pokémon added). So you can now choose to play through Pearl and Diamong with their old restricted dex or Platinum with its new expended one, which at least lets you pick a regional dex closer to your preference, something that other regions don't benefit from.
>The cross-gen evolution of old Pokémon are ugly.
This is another subjective point, but I'll address it anyway. If you do not like the new evolution of an old Pokémon, you can simply use their previous form instead of evolving them. Of course, the evolutions are generally stronger, but if they didn't gain a new evolution then you'd be forced to use the weaker form anyway, so if that's the alternative, we're better off with the new evolutions existing, so you can choose to use the new, stronger evolution, or use its previous form that is just as weak or as strong as before. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Eviolite in generation 5, these new evolutions now work as a buff for their previous form, who wouldn't have been able to use the Eviolite otherwise. Lastly, while this criticism is often said regarding the new evolution of Kanto pokémon, it ignores that some Johto and Hoenn pokémon got new evolutions that are vastly more popular than their previous form, such as Mismagius, Weavile or Dusknoir. It also ignores that some of them are split evolutions (Leafeon, Glaceon, Gallade, Froslass), which do not "erase" the old fully-evolved form.
