Having a shitton of ready-made models, instead of making the game 'create' them on the spot by swapping textures, results in some slight RAM economy.
They COULD just make shinies into palette swaps, and other variants into in-engine variations, but that would consume RAM and CPU power that the console usually doesn't have to spare.
I don't even know why I bothered typing this.
We'll just have this thread again in about 5 seconds, and someone else will type your exact response, as if we didn't already know the answer to "wtf why so many models".
