I'm noticing a running trend with these games. It's almost like they were off to a good start and then just dropped the ball like they usually do. What the fuck happened?

It doesn't help that they made so many games at one time. Little Town Hero and Let's Go were both in production alongside Sword and Shield iirc.
Game Freak just shit the bed trying too many games out at one time. TPCI doesn't help either.

I call it the "Skyrim effect"; they make the beginning the best part so that reviewers (who usually only play an hour or two of the games they review) will see the best part and give a better score.

This is actually pretty standard for RPGs. Square Enix did it all the time with Final Fantasy.

Yeah, especially FF7. Midgar is unique and is pretty much its own self-contained story in a unique city, then after that it's 99% generic JRPG, minus the couple exceptions and the fact the game might've started the "main villain becomes angelic/godlike and ultra powerful with big orchestral music, etc., etc." trope.

Yeah, I'm sure it was Sephiroth who started that trope, not the previous FF that had a four-phases boss based around The Divine Comedy that culminated in a fight against Kefka with angel wings who calls himself a God multiple times, all done to the sound of an 18 minutes long orchestra.

It wasn't really a "trope" until Sephiroth, though, and growing up, I was the only person I knew IRL that even knew who Kefka was, but Sephiroth was one of those guys that literally everyone knew.

This is standard for most games in general desu. Most of the polish goes into the first few hours. Maybe that wouldn't be such a big deal if it lead to more "first part was amazing, the rest was just good" games, but instead it's lead to games which are "first part good, rest lazy and rushed as fuck".

Little Town Hero involved absolutely zero meddling from TPC so I’d say gamefreak did it to themselves. If they don’t want to be slaves to Pokémon, then get some new blood in to take over for a while, it’s not like said new blood can take their shares in TPC anyway
