If you don't go out of your way to get experience wherever you can you'll actually be underleveled for most of the game even with the exp share, it's a good challenge and all the rivals and gym leaders actually have somewhat decent teams.
As someone who's played every mainline Pokemon game, the people who complain about Sword and Shield being too easy compared to the others are either dexcels who haven't even played the game and are just looking for any excuse to slander it, or are people who abuse items or get themselves overleveled and then for some unknown reason wonder why the game isn't difficult. SS is actually pretty middle of the road in terms of challenge, Gen 1 and 2 and their remakes are easier, RSE is easier, and the gen 6 games are ridiculously easier. Leon himself is the most difficult champion yet.
