It also essentially introduced a Magic Type with a fittingly unique spin, since all Pokémon are all already magic anyway. The fact that Fairy is strong against Dragon is fairly intuitive, and presents a swift, elegant and interesting solution to the overpowered Dragon problem.
It's not every day we get a new Type. We may never get another. But Fairy Type was a perfect fit for the Pokémon series.
