I legit do not understand the hate for hop. Everyone keeps saying he kept popping up to annoy you but it never felt like that for me. I did take my time with 35 hours to complete the story though, so maybe that’s why. It was fun fighting him as his team got progressively stronger throughout the story l.

Yes, Hop is bad. He's another garbage pushover rival who wanks you constantly for knowing how to play the game. But at least he's just the rival. At least he actually battles you in a game where battles are the main mechanic.
Lillie is basically the main character of Sun and Moon. You make the mistake of walking into a town, and suddenly it's all about Lillie. You try to mash B. All you want to do is catch monsters and battle with them, but instead you get wrapped into her asinine family drama. It's like that one cutscene in B/W where you run into Bianca and her dad, except it's the whole game.
You don't even get the satisfaction of beating Lillie into the ground like you do with Hop.

Hau is way worse, he didn't have any ambition other than being the kakuna ratata instead of his father and was only doing the island challenge for the luls and the food.
Hop wants to be the champion, he has moments of introspection where he thinks he isn't good enough, hell he even switches his whole team around to try and get better. Who else does that?

Never understood why people complain about this. Having a "mean" rival like Blue/Silver (or Bede if he can be counted as a rival) who acts like an overconfident asshole all the time despite getting demolished in every battle with you is even worse.

People have different tastes, you know? Some people enjoy heavy cutscenes and dialogue, even children. There are millions of kids who love RPGs like Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy, for example. As a kid I didn't mind the lengthy dialogue in the gen 4 or 5 games at all, but many people here complain about it.

Man, kids fucking hate being stopped from playing a video game by some guy who wants to talk to them for ten minutes. Kids are all about short attention spans and wanting to actually catch pokemon instead of having to talk to people. Like, it probably wouldn't be so bad if the cutscenes were actually flashy and cool, like the fight scenes in Tales of Berseria, but they're just....text.

It's bizarre that Masuda claims that the smartphone kiddies have such a short attention span that they can't possibly be interested in a battle frontier, but at the same time puts hours of boring text in his video game.

Because Lillie plays a completely different role, of which there's no real equivalent in this game, so she's irrelevant to the discussion. Hop is compared to Hau because they share the same role, they're the "friend" you battle along the way. Gladion was the "rival" of Gen 7, oddly enough. He's officially grouped in as one for some reason.

The problem isn't the portrayal of the rivals, the problem is the games themselves.
They're healing you at every turn when you don't even need it. They're giving your free XP with every battle - Pokemon that aren't even fighting are getting points.

These games are getting too easy and I don't understand why. I don't get why the company is going the way it's going.

Take Barry from gen4. He's definetely friendlier, but he takes you seriously and gives his all in fights and can be seriously challenging.

Hop just gets steamrolled and praises you for the most basic things, treating you like a 4 years old that requires constant positive feedback.
Even Hau didn't treat you this much like a child
