He didn't want to wait because of the possibility of Leon losing the tournament and the new champion not being as easy to influence.

The game's story is still barely-there and full of nonsensical motivations, but if you have a brain you should be able to figure at least this much out.

Apparently he's a brat that hates delays. But of course, that doesn't excuse the fact that he scheduled the Darkest Day to be in the middle of the god damn tournament. You can't even argue that he wanted to be hailed as a hero, he fucking turned himself in when all was said and done. Martyrdom, maybe? I don't fucking know.
