Yes, I would immediately beat it for growling. You could say my attack would go up.
You can't mess around with dogs, especially with all the pit bull and mutt breeds around.

Depends. There's a pretty distinct difference between a play-growl and a threat-growl. Paying attention to a dog's body language is important.

Don’t overthink it, I’m fairly sure the thought process was just to scare your oppenent enough to make them a bit too startled to fight properly. Of course in real life, things like growl and screech will have different effects on people. This is a game with very simplified ideas.
