I've beaten his punk ass in a landslide literally EVERY time we battled. His brother was the fucking champion. There's no reason he should be such a shitty trainer. Everything he got was handed to him. The dynamax band, the gym challenge sponsorship, the starter pokemon.

Okay, I know that the player character also gets these hand-outs, but the difference is that the player character gets good and deserves his victories.

This bumbling faggot is constantly losing to me and other characters and yet after I caught my Zacian, this little fucking shit gets Zamazenta without a battle IN A FUCKING REGULAR POKEBALL.

It is pretty well established that Legendaries (and Pokémon in general) will let themselves be caught easy if they don't feel like "Testing" you and already consider you worthy (See: Zekrom and Kyurem in White and Nebby in SM.). Your Z-Dog wanted to test (you), while Hop's Z-Dog basically got cared and ego stroked for while under Dynamax-AIDS and considered that enough of a trial.

Also Zamazenta works better with looks for the story appearances they make (Looks more imposing unarmored and in the Mist, Offensive Dog goes out of control and attacks shit, Defensive Dog protects people, Bitch Trainer gets a Bitch Legendary.), so it is a real shame Sword gonna be the "Canon" version.

Pokémon jumped the shark six years ago. I'm not sure there's a term to describe a franchise jumping the shark after already having done it.

Regardless, most rivals get curbstomped by the player multiple times throughout the story and ones like Blue, Wally (admittedly you only fight him twice), Barry/Pearl, Cheren, Hugh, Shauna, Serena/Calem & Hau are all doing the exact same challenge as the player, hell those last two get given a similar item to the Dynamax Band that Hau does. The Gym Sponsorship thing just seems like a massive formality that GF added to pretend like it somehow makes the Gym Challenge more important when it's really even less important in these games than the ones where you at least needed the badges to use HMs.

Also with regards to Hop we have several instances where we meet him after he defeats a Gym Leader so it's implied through storytelling that he is capable enough to defeat the same gym leaders as the player (which isn't exactly saying much given that the gym leaders can be mostly one-shot but whatever). The issue more so stems from the fact the game is so piss easy even if you aren't trying that any loss from NPCs comes off as complete ineptitude.
