Granite Cave has them and the Metal Coat is found in the Sevi Islands on Five Island by the Memorial Tower.

Has anyone successfully used an Onix in a playthrough of any game and wasn't horrible/ a slugfest?

Cheers. I play Emerald over FRLG when it comes to Gen 3.

Keep in mind unless your game is modded you can't evolve or get a Steelix til you have the national dex.

No. I tried using one in HeartGold once (even traded the Metal Coat over to evolve it at an early level) but it took so long to train it I eventually dropped it. Shame, because I really like Steelix.

Used one in gen 2 but I cheated and traded over a metal coat. However, steelix is practically unkillable.
Used one again in platinum to even greater success because you get metal coat earlier and steelix and onix have better moves. Curse, gyro ball and earthquake let's you destroy everything

Rocky is an honorary hm slave with strength and dig for every HGSS playthrough, and can do decently well early on.
Tried using one in RBY and ended up cheesing the game with bind+x accuracy+x speed to vortex everything into eq/ rock slide range, with fissure on the side for big stuff
