That's over the entire lifespan of the franchise and adjusted for inflation. Combine that with the fact that most of the money Pokemon makes goes into Nintendo rather than Game Freak and the numbers become a lot less heavy.

This is actually the perfect reason to defend Game Freak. Clearly they don't make nearly as much off the games as people think they do. It is very most likely The Pokemon Company that fucks them over with shit budgets and tight deadlines, because they're the ones who need new pokemon to market.

I'd argue the contrary. It's second only to merch and it tops TGC, anime and manga, not to mention that it's a pretty substantial source of revenue when compared to the other franchises. The only other one in the chart that has a comparable ratio of merchandise/actual-main-product is Star Wars which, love it or hate it, has a history of having very respectable production values

Iirc GF only has the rights to make the games. They likely get no merch revenue cut and their game revenue is probably split with Nintendo. They're not in charge of the franchise or its resources at all. All they do is make games under a timecrunch either put on them by TPCI or the head of GF

Exactly, gamefreak probably only sees about 10% of revenue which is probably around 60-70 million a year. That's big but it's not the overwhelming juggernaut people make them out to be.

I'm guessing gamefreak takes their cut of the revenue as pure profit and Nintendo actually provides the budget for the games. So the real question is why Nintendo is not upping the budget. Perhaps because Pokemon isn't a first party IP they care less about it.

I just dont think gamefreak is the problem because ultimately all roads lead back to Nintendo. Nintendo owns all the trademarks, they have all the power, they have control over the Pokemon company. So to me the one who needs to step in and make changes is Nintendo. I thin they just don't care enough because the games still sell sell and they're focused more on their own IPs like Mario and Zelda. At this point Mario is selling more than Pokemon and I think Nintendo is not particularly unhappy with that.

The Pokemon Company is owned by Gamefreak, and they only exist to distribute the influx of money, as well as manage licensing and brand deals. They don't really generate profit for the most part. The only year they had a significant profit was when Go was released because everyone involved made so much money TPC spiked alongside them.
