>>41495474We finally got a Dark-type Gym Leader after 20 years. Dark is my favorite type, so to see that we got not one but two Dark-type Gym Leaders in the game (one of whom was also a rival) is great. Character wise, they weren't that engaging but I liked their punk theme. I wish Piers was more devious because it seems now that Dark = Punk, which is not always a 1:1 comparison. Of course, I take issu with the fact that neither character is a pure Dark-type specialist. Yes, Piers uses a Dark team when you fight him in his gym, but he uses Toxtricity in the rematches with you. Marnie always has a Toxicroak on her team as well, even when she becomes a gym leader. While I know these Pokemon are designed to counter Dark's weaknesses, other gym specialists in this game had monotype teams. It feels so half-assed that we did not get a true Dark gym leader yet.
Add insult to injury, other characters use Dark-type Pokemon that could have went to Piers or Marnie. Marnie could have had a Drapion instead of Toxicroak for that countering Dark's weaknesses thing. And Alolan regional variants are coded into the game so they could have been given any of those.
Just a shame that we waited so long and got a half-assed attempt. And GF will likely shelf Dark-type gym leaders next gen because we just had one.
