Some people kept following the games and acknowledging the improvements BW brought but most just went dUrR wEreS chAriZaRd hUrR when gen 5 came out. That was the gen where Masuda put his everything into making and people rejected it for the stupidest reasons so of course he just gave up and has been winging it ever since.
Fuck, I'm even suspecting every post gen 5 pokemon looks like a cereal mascot because that way it's easier to model them. I doubt any pokemon made after BW would even work as a sprite.
