So ever since I started hitting around level 40 or so pokemon have started breaking out of even ultra balls constantly even at low health.

What the fuck is going on? Am I doing something wrong?

I feel like for some reason, the catch rate on wild Pokemon that are higher leveled than your team is insanely low. It's a really stupid design decision that made me start ignoring Pokemon in the Wild Area about halfway through the game, and I don't understand why GameFreak would discourage players from interacting with Sword and Shield's biggest selling point. But you really are better off just rushing to the end of the game and then coming back when your Pokemon are above level 60.

Allegedly there's a mechanic in place where if the wild Pokemon is a higher level than the Pokemon you have out, there's a penalty to the catch rate. This penalty goes away once you have all the gym badges.

The catch rate is lowered if the wild Pokemon is higher levelled than you. I beleive this goes away after the 8th gym.

Just use standard Poke Balls. I’ve been reliably catching everything in them since Gen 4, even legendaries. Just buy hundreds of them on the cheap.

from gen 5 onwards I always use plain pokeballs, except for quickies where I use quick balls or dust balls.
