He starts developing a noticable inferiority complex and self-doubt that he didn't have before as soon as you leave Motostoke and he loses to Bede though. Are you dumb? Though unfortunately the resolution of his character isn't until post-game.

That said, Hau did the same concept better because the internal conflict was more interesting and represented better. His character being torn between this happy optimist and you being his friend conflicting with his inferiority complex due to your success and constant victories over him, slowly manifesting in him becoming more frustrated over time, but ultimately accepting his losses and shortcomings when he faces you head on in the end was all delivered a lot better IMO.

His character development is useless for a pokémon game and it doesn't make sense at all because he still loses no matter what, not only against you.
The problem with him is even that this game forces to say good things towards him or while talking about him, making you say that he is a good rival etc.

Gladion and Hau are great rivals with personal conflicts and their own actually interesting plotlines. No other rival even comes close to those two.
