I still play Pokemon, but I can safely say Pokemon has been meh and samey for so long, while every MegaTen game that I've tried has been really good, the exceptions are Persona Q and Persona 4 Dancing game, I didn't bother with the new ones but even now I can go back to Soul Hackers and clock more time into it than any 3DS Pokemon game.

I’ve only played Nocturne, SMTIV and Strange Journey.

Is it worth doing Apocalypse and the first two SMT games? SMT1 is on iOS.

Try branching out from main series.
Digital Devil games are pretty nice, they still feel like an offshoot of Nocturne.
Any of the DS games are okay too, some are remastered to 3DS- Soul Hacker's 2D dungeon and its scout/negotiating AI are BS.
