Alder was actually pretty cool. He is also bigger than most of the other human sprites and is well liked in Unova, so when you see that N destroyed him with the legendary dragon it just made the characters seem more important than most games.
Alder > LGPE rival, Diantha, Leon, and Wallace for sure.

The only reason why people 'forget' about Alder is because they never have to fight against him as a boss, like other Champions. He exists in the story not to be a pillar of strength, but as an elder trying to share his wisdom with a younger generation after dealing with grief. He and Iris were the best.
