The worst period for Pokemon was when RS got announced. That's when people lost interest. That year was abysmal. People hated Hoennmons so much the games only had 50,000 preorders and Nintendo made a point of hiding RS sales data until 10 years later. The fact you couldn't bring your old Pokemon into the game almost buries the franchise.
It's FireRed and LeafGreen that saved the franchise (they had 150,000 preorders and Nintendo literally issued a public press release saying how they 'shattered' RS)
