It's still surprisingly enjoyable to play gen 1. For some reason I get more absorbed when replaying these then when trying to play FR/LG.

Gen 1 seems more unique to me than any other gen. Like Gen 2 is just Gen 3 without Abilities, Gen 3 is Gen 4 without the special split and so on. No other gen has weird shit like 100% criticals, Wrap being the cheesiest move in the game, Toxic/Leech Seed stacking, Hyper Beam not refreshing if you kill with it.

you dont need to, just save before the fights and eventually they will play terrible moves. go master ball a bird if you really need to.

Gen 1's absurd number of glitches, sequence breaking, and lack of plot makes it pretty nice to replay.

that's as far as you get in gen 1. The AI in this game is terrible, you should be able to beat the E4 in your 40s. Prep well, Agatha will fuck you with her lvl60 Gengar otherwise. Get some X Items or whatever.

gen1 is full of shit but it's still the comfiest and most pure pokemon experience. no worrying about genders or natures or ivs or shinys or whatever, just pure pokemon goodness
