I’ll put my own take on it here.
I completed the living dex and started shiny hunting around 2016, and when I first started it seemed tedious and daunting (At this time I had 6 or 7 random shinies but none I hunted for). After doing a few horde hunts in Gen 6, I found that I enjoyed it since I viewed it as a hardmode version of completing the living dex, being to complete a shiny living dex.
Fast forward to today, and through various on-and-off periods and from Gens 3-8 I have over 500 legitimate shinies.
Can it be tedious? Yeah. You don’t really do it as a main activity though; I like catching up on new shows or calling my friends while I do so.
Is there a benefit? Not really, but I just find it fun to essentially have another dex to fill.
I’ve also made a good amount of friends through this, so I wouldn’t say it alienated me from the community.
It’s not for everyone, but I think there are far worse things to do with your time.
