Like most of the time knowing story of other games might help you catch references, but the only games off the top of my head where playing another entry is crucial is Apocalypse (since it features characters from IV), Digital Devil Saga 2, since it's a sequel to the first one
though technically it's less sequel and more part 2 and the Persona 2
since it's a duology that forms one large plot
