I was going to buy Pokemon Sword for my kids on Christmas but saw the user reviews and was like WTF, so you retards have 20 minutes to convince me to buy the games

But if you were looking for anything beyond that, you're better off playing literally any other Pokémon game. Buy him Breath of the Wild instead.

Most of the butthurt reviews are from people who convinced themselves that the games would be some fantastic Elder Scrolls-scale adventure because it was finally going to be a main series game on a home console, or are upset about the dex cut. In truth, everything mechanically is a slight step up from Sun/Moon, with even more accessibility for getting into higher-level play (at the cost of GTS). It's basically like a 3DS game in terms of visuals and content, good for on-the-road travel, not for sitting there playing start to finish and ending it in 15 hours or so.

If you're new to the series or returning, it's a decent play, but from a game design perspective it's a bit lacking compared to some earlier titles.

Your kids will probably get a more fun and complete experience out of LGPE if you don't already have it. If you do have it, go for a safe bet Nintendo property like Mario Odyssey. Wait a year for the third/ultra version unless your kids actively, of their own volition, desperately want SWSH in spite of the problems you've heard in reviews.

Pokemon's the largest whenever you account for merchandising sales, TCG, Go, and et cetera. Actual game sales for SwSh aren't doing much better than Smash or Splatoon at the moment, and somehow I don't think you're going to start putting out numbers for the budget of any of them.

That would be like expecting any movie tie-in game to be the 10/10 GOTY because they have a big franchise behind them. That's not how any of this works, at all.

When will this meme die. Pokemon game sales are still incredibly lucrative, its literally the second highest selling video game franchise only beaten by "mario" when considering all mainline games and spin offs like party, kart and sports.
This is like expecting pokemon to be better and more innovative than GTA, and Final Fantasy, and Sonic the hedgehog, and the legend of zelda, and halo, and the elder scrolls, and super smash bros, and splatoon. Because when just looking at sales of games pokemon has all of them beat

Honestly though, just buy Let's Go.
Your kids will have a better and more fun experience because they can see and interact with their Pokemon on the go (follow and riding etc), it's a lot more kids looking, and there is no big ass wild area to get lost and find their asses wrecked by a bunch of lv60 mons they can find even before getting a single badge.
For kids, I think that (and offline raids being frustrating) would hurt their enjoyment the most.

Also, the single biggest drawback to let's go doesn't effect them. Presumably, they've never experienced a kanto game before so it won't be a stripped down version of recycled content for them, it's all fresh and new.
