I think back then they didnt make their own shinies but it was generated.
So there must've been SOME reason the game chose those colors.

Shinies used to be computer generated and it just happened to make green very often. Now they make shinies manually

Most old shinies were pretty much randomly generated by shifting the hue of the palette. New shinies seem to be mostly handpicked. For example the new fox's shiny represents a gray fox. I wonder which sick fuck handpicked intelleon, if they did.
