My hot take is that while a bunch of the things they added are improvements, the Pokemon distribution is still wonky just like it was in Gen 2 and the Pokeathalon is simply overrated Newgrounds-tier shit.

How? There's only so many ways you can do a Nuzlocke or other form of challenge run, and the gutted Battle Frontier is exactly the same as it was in Platinum. I guess you could re-fight the Gym Leaders repeatedly, but it's not like they change anything after the first time you rematch them.

My biggest problem is the loss of Pokemon. Pretty much everything from Gen 5-8 is better than what 3 and 4 gave us in terms of quality Pokemon. So you go back to the good games but the shitmon or you play the lackluster new games with great mon. It's why I appreciate romhacks that add new Pokemon

Johto is a grea region to explore, there are tons of interesting other things to do like the pokeatlon. Great Pokémon to use which are fun to use multiple times. Sure, sometimes you do things twice the exact same, but it's still fun to do. The whole atmosphere of Johto with the following Pokémon alone makes it fun to play multiple times

The level scaling in johto is trash. It needs romhacks to be an enjoyable experience, whereas Emerald, Platinum and FRLG are fantastic out of the box.

Fuck the old Game Corner. I don't get how anyone likes literal slot machines in Pokemon over logic based puzzles. Nintendo keeps them out of the series because of the age rating and "muh children" even though ironically when I was a kid playing Crystal these things made me want to avoid slots in real life because of how bullshit they were.
