you either have a pokemon dominate another in a sparring match to catch it or the mon was already pretty fine with getting caught so you can just throw a ball at it
in the anime the very first few things you see are pikachu just noping the fuck out of his pokeball and basically keeping his demeanor but changing as time goes on, in the video games you literally have to get certain badges to even begin catching certain strength pokemon before they would obey you at all
if anything, pokemon admire and respect strong trainers because they enjoy the relationship just as much on a deeper level than fighting for gil, or for the weak ones it's an opportunity to become strong
