They remove all the bad shit about platnium (SAVING A LOT OF DATA, Mt. Coronet, abundant HM usage) and replace it with a shitton of content and a much better region.

I'd be happy to fight over how bad Sinnoh is but after SWSH the fact is Sinnoh is fucking awesome and we were lucky to get both Pt and HGSS.

If a game had the first gym leader be level 60 and the only wild pokemon were level 2, the game isn't hard, but mind numbingly boring because I'd have to just grind to get to level 50+ to even stand a chance

Yes, except the jump isn't fucking 60 levels you retard. It's a 10 level jump between Pryce and Clair, and you're likely going to be over Pryce's level already when you reach him. Then from Clair to Lance it's another 10 level jump, with the Elite Four falling somewhere in-between them. As long as you don't skip trainers and don't use repels everywhere, you shouldn't be more than 10 levels under Lance's, which is a perfectly acceptable challenge that doesn't require grinding; and if you can't do it, you can just use items, which still wouldn't require grinding.

No, the game is a Johto/Kanto game. It doesn't END at Lance. It ends at Red. Why don't you people seem to understand this? Kanto is INTEGRAL to the game, and that's fine because it was developed as a sequel. Both regions are connected. Houndour is not a "Johto Pokémon" if it's not found in Johto, it's a Gen II Pokémon.

Nobody said Lance has to use ONLY Pokémon from Kanto. But he's from Kanto, so it makes sense if he DOES happen to only use Kantomons.
You're the one arguing that using only mons from one region is inherently bad. What we're saying is that it doesn't matter if a trainer uses Pokémon from only one region or multiple ones.
Your examples aren't even good ones. Cynthia does use a Sinnoh-only team when you fight her in Sinnoh. In Unova, she's traveling there. Her catching new mons from the region she's visiting is a good addition because her Sinnoh team already had 6 fully-evolved mons. Despite that, she still uses her original Sinnoh team in the World Tournament. Lance by comparison, originally only used 5 Pokémon and two of them weren't fully-evolved. So they gave his team progression by fully evolving his team and adding a new member. The new member being also from Kanto isn't a problem.
Caitlyn only uses Unova mons in her first match just like everyone else in Unova. But when you rematch her, she's added two mons to her team.. both from Sinnoh.

I agree that waiting around a week and contacting them at certain times is asking a lot, but I think HGSS are really good at immersion and world building (their extra dialogue and locations, pic related, they're real characters) so personally, I kind of like it. These games are really content rich and really work best for long-term play (although 130 days for max Safari Zone is not-so-good).

I'm assuming you forgot, but Emerald's is by far the worst, you can't do anything to get the rematches, you just wait around. Then, when you finally do get them, they're not even difficult, you have to beat them 3 times for a team of 6 and for levels to at max touch 60.

This is a good game. There's a lot more hand-holding and roadblocking than in Crystal, but overall these are great games, arguably the best, but until I replay them again soon, it's still B2W2 for me.

Why do people defend HGSS shitty level curve and the fact that Gym leaders teames are still pathetic.
I like the games, they have lots of nice details with bunch of cool contents, but there is literally no excuse for not fixing obvious mistakes form the original games.

There are only 100 Johto Pokémon in comparison to 151 Kanto Pokémon. It only figures that 3/5 Pokémon you're going to be encountering are going to be Kanto Pokémon. Yes, I know that there are a lot of rare Johto Pokémon, but that doesn't make them worse. Games need to have rare Pokémon, and making a bunch of Kanto Pokémon rare isn't going to make them as desirable as new Pokémon.

This is why I think BW and Plat are the best in the series. They may not have an extra region for post-game and cut back on some parts from previous games, but make up for what they don't have with great content.

The gym leaders tend to be pretty pathetic in the majority of Pokémon games, they're meant to be stronger than other trainers but all it does is make you 2HKO them instead of OHKO and they never get to setup. I won't pretend HGSS is better than the other games, but I fail to see how it's worse than the other ones. To me, they're the same.
I genuinely don't see what's wrong with the level curve considering that everyone constantly complain about how easy the games are. You complained about the level curve and the easy gyms in the same sentence; isn't Clair being higher level than you'd expect a good thing? It inherently makes her harder than otherwise. At no point is the level curve bad enough to force you to grind, especially since you can always just use revives and potions anyway.

Having them be rare in the wild doesn't mean that trainers shouldn't use them. In fact, trainers should make more use of them, that way you could have them seen in the pokedex and thus go searching for them in the wild. Was the ghost gym having 4 Gastly and its evos really necessary when Mismagius existed by gen 4?

Lance's team is what it is because the only new Dragon in gen2 was Kingdra and it's Clair's ace. There weren't any new Pokémon that look like dragons either so they gave him Charizard which does look like one.
That's it. It has nothing to do with rarity or progression or any other dumb shit. There just weren't any good candidate for his team.
They didn't change it in the remakes because they added rematches. Since he does have a new team in his rematch with newer dragon Pokémon I guess they decided to keep his old team for the first battle with him.

Yes, variety is good, but even if Johto's Trainer team variety is a 6/10, it doesn't make the whole game unplayable because it has a lot going for it. As remakes, HGSS do have to remain accurate to a certain degree. As remakes of what is essentially the true second entry of the franchise, there are going to be limitations compared to the entries from 9 years later that have 493 Pokémon. Game Freak got better at making teams with each game, but there are certain guidelines to follow when remaking a game. There are certain things I would have changed to make it closer to the originals.

I personally think that HGSS are moderately overrated and that Platinum remains the undisputed king of Pokemon in most categories (at the very least Top 5), but in the context of HGSS most of its flaws are still moderately forgiveable since the game is still well-built and provides an overall strong experience. There's a reason people talk it up to this day as one of THE best ways to remake an old game.

SwSh is like 80% flaws with very little in the way of improvements. In most categories, it's either quality stagnation or quality decay. I won't say it's not enjoyable, but it lacks any meaningful long-lasting impact. Other than brainless nostalgia trips where you fondly remember curry, or that time the Steelix spawned in your asshole, SwSh is likely to go the way of USUM and be completely forgotten in a few years.

HGSS has over a hundred of hours of content with two regions, 16 gyms, tons of optional areas, plenty of Legendaries to hunt, rematches (with all 16 gym leaders, the Elite Four and the Champion ALL getting a 6-pokemon team with mons from various regions in their rematch), and the Battle Frontier.
You fight Lance's dumb team once and it takes 10 minutes.

imo the most valid criticism against GSC/HGSS is the lack of Gen II mons in the gym leaders' teams. Faulkner could have had a Noctowl, Buggsy a Ariados or Ledian, Morty a Misdreavus. Whitney is fine, Jasmine is fine, Pryce is fine, Clair is fine. Dunno about Chuck, as there isn't really a fitting one for him imo.
I don't know if it's my own headcanon, but I seem to remember the Gen II pokemon being presented as new, rare species that have just been discovered, which explains why they are found both in Johto and Kanto and why all of them aren't common. Following this explanation (which just be my own autistic defense for the games), the distribution of pokemon is ok to me.

This might've worked back in 1999 but Kanto got revamped in 2004 and allowed Johtomons in and the world of pokemon got bigger with the passing Gen 3 and Sinnoh. Meanwhile, Johto's ratio are as meager as they were in '99.

You're still not going to be level 32 when you reach Lance. Through normal play you should be around level 40 when you reach the Elite four. A 10 level gap is a decent challenge.

Why does it matter that Pokémon with low BST are very prevalent in the game? They all have great designs for anyone to find them appealing and they're all completely usable in-game, especially in gen4. Along with "muh-level curve" , they make the game more interesting and challenging. People complaining probably still use the team of starter, Ampharos, Noctowl, etc.

Honestly, the more I think about it, I don't think the level-curve is that big of an issue for in-game. These games are a lot easier than people remember, and the level-gaps you encounter provide good challenges or don't even really matter. The only time when I think it gets a little ridiculous is the Red fight. However, assuming you do the Gym + E4 rematches first, it's not impossible at all, just a difficult final final boss, fitting.

Only time it becomes a real problem is completing the dex, grinding for high-level evolutions, if that's what you're referring to.

They should have also added Electrivire, Gliacor, Magmortar, Rhyperior, Leafeon and Glaceon (even tho they can't evolve, but just put the rock in Illex forest and ice cave), Weavile, Porygon Z, Honchkrow, Magnezone (again, just make an area suitable to evolve), Bonsly, Mime Jr, Togekiss, Wynaut, Azurill, and Munchlax

Alternatively they could have made the radio tower do it, seeing as the alterations made by team rocket were specifically to make pokemon evolve; they could just say it also gives off the correct electromagnetic radiation that allows Magneton and Nosepass to evolve. After all, radio waves are electromagnetic radiation. Or even just have an unlockable radio signal like Sinnoh sound and Hoenn sound that evolves them when they level up while its playing.

Yeesh, slow down, these are good remakes. Gen4 mechanical upgrades with their P/S split and move-pool revamps allowed every Pokémon to actually be usable and worthwhile. The aesthetic face-lift did a lot work giving Johto the memorable character it once lacked and desperately needed in its important characters and landscapes.

The gen 4 updates are inherent to the entire series though. As remakes of Johto games, they don't actually fix the Johto specific problems; being lack of variety in teams and Johtomons specifically (metapod and kakuna for bug gym, 3 dragonites) a terrible level curve, and ridiculous encounter rates of Johto mons, to name a few. Sure they add neat new content like following pokekon, but I'd rather they fix problems then add new bells and whistles like they did in SwSh.

Yeah, but we're talking about GSC remakes. I'm not arguing about which gen4 entry added more beneficial changes, that's retarded. I've been talking about what HGSS did that improved upon GSC. The mechanical fixes warranted HGSS existence (that and allowing Johto-mons to be transferable).

I still believe they are non-issues and come down to creative preferences at this point. GF wanted player levels to end around 60~ (they didn't want Kanto to be seen as optional post-game), so all levels adjust as such, but the level jumps don't hurt the game, there is still a reasonable challenge throughout the whole game. GF probably viewed GSC as a direct continuation as RBY to allow smooth/organic familiarization with gen2 mons, keeping it this way into HGSS probably because they consider this aesthetic very important to the character of gen2 and to be preserved as such.

I don't know man, a decade later and I think it's easy to look back in hindsight for what they could've or should've done, but HGSS really did turn out great. I'm guessing we're just going to have to agree to disagree because I'm getting sleepy.

Kanto didn't get Gen II Pokémon in FRLG except for Cerulean Cave with Wobbuffet. The rest appear in the Sevii Islands. Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby can only be bred at the daycare on Four Island. The King's Rock (for Politoed and Slowking), Metal Coat (for Steelix and Scizor), Up-Grade (for Porygon2), Dragon Scale (for Kingdra), and Sun Stone (Bellossom) are only found on the Sevii Islands. I guess Raikou, Entei, or Suicune will roam Kanto, but they're not regular encounters. Ho-Oh and Lugia are on Navel Rock. Nice headcanon, but the gen 4 games (DPPt and HGSS) take place 3 years after the Hoenn and Kanto games, meaning that all the Johto pokemon were already known of and documented 3 years prior to the Johto games as they were in the National pokedex in FRLG and RSE.
