What's the point of Gym at this point?

They were first an easy roadblock to make introducing some sort of bosses to beat before going further in your adventure or not allowing overgrinding.
But now they are way too easy and everybody know the deal to just bring a good type and let it do all the job

Wouldn't be better to get rid of gyms and let you discovers more of the map and let you get the equivalent of a badge throught story challenge like helping the radio tower from the Team Rocket in gold in one go, find the mystery of the ghost of Lavanville or finding Rayquaza to calm Groundon and Kyogre, ect..
