Of course, my only advice to try and use stuff that's at the very least lv60+, lv70+ to be more safe. And even then if you don't have anything around that high, fuck it, join anyways. If someone starts crying they can fuck off and rely on the NPC's

Your level doesn't actually matter too much. Most people will carry with a legendary. You'll probably die if the max mon targets you, but you'll only spend one turn out of action, and cheering can give everyone a bunch of different buffs.

Just use attacking moves to break the shield pieces, you'll be fine. Plus, anything you catch will scale down to your highest badge level, the game doesn't give you a level 60 gigantamax that you can't use.

There are a few different reasons. Certain raids give certain TRs, certain raids might be particularly easy to beat even with the AI, some raids have a chance of giving you a Pokemon with its Hidden Ability, and yes, the host of a rare spawn raid can just keep doing it over and over and closing the game once they get the option to catch it or not to give other people as many chances as they want to try and catch it, which is a pretty big deal since the catch rates are so abysmally low.

You can do high level raids at a low level, and the mons scale down if you catch them. You can have a level 20-ish gigantamax mon before the first gym, I'd say.

I think they overestimated how well the stamp system and Nintendo's online services would actually function in the final product.
If you had access to many more stamps from other players and they updated at a more reasonable pace, then I could see it being a feasibly "group effort" to team up with randos and try to catch them. But because the online is dogshit, all we can do is get into friend circlejerks and abuse exploits to get what we want.

No it's not "fixed" or anything, you're just not crazy lucky. I usually reset my time back to normal and then go back up to new years again infinitely until I find it, on average it takes 2-3 "months" of time traveling to find the gigantamax. If you're lucky you'll get it sooner than that

non gmax have really good catch rates and anything rare or hard I just time exploited for 100%

the worse are exclusive gmax because the catch rate is so small (but I got them from anons hosting here)
the 2nd worse is finding 1/2* raids which is the bulk of what I'm missing

We know the base catch rates for raid mons (listed below.) We also know that ball multipliers apply as you would expect, and that master balls work. Repeat or net are good choices as they have the highest multiplier of 3.5x when you meet their conditions.
Raids you host (online or local, doesn't matter):
- Promoted, event G-maxes: ~15% (e.g. G-max butterfree, centiskorch, etc. right now.)
- Standard (non-event) G-maxes: Guaranteed catch.
- All other raids: Guaranteed catch.
Raids you join as a guest:
- Promoted, event G-maxes: ~3%
- Standard (non-event) G-maxes: ~3% (e.g. G-max Lapras, Machamp etc.)
- All other raids: Same catch rate as catching that mon in the wild at its level at 1hp

The "Guaranteed catch" conditions above for host are well established. The others numbers are based on experiments in the above youtube video and should be taken with a grain of salt. But they seem about right.

One thing that hosts often do is reset their game during the catching prompt. That way they can repeatedly run the raid and give others more opportunities to join and catch the Pokemon, since catch rates for Gigantamaxed Pokemon are abysmal for guests.
Which is why I was kinda surprised when you only did one run and caught it, since most of us do multiple runs.
