I love it, it has my favourite mons in the series.

They didn't shy out of giving Pokemon clothes like Jynx, Machamp or Hitmonchan.
They didn't shy out of making a magneton or a pokeball a pokemon.
They didnt shy out of any concept, this is why gen 1 was so liked because it was risky.

Most gens nowdays are just cartoony animals.

Let's face it: these games are only viewed highly because of the lack of quality games on Game Boy. If these games were on a different system, or the Game Boy had a stronger library, everyone would shit on these titles for their bugs, glitches, flaws, and halfassed features

I agree that most modern pokemon are pretty lame in comparision of Gen 1, sure Gen 1 had some crap designs like Voltorb or Exggecute...but overall it felt more creative.
I'm looking at Gen 8 and it's 90% cartoon animals with no distinc features.

You seem to misunderstand something.
These games were the game boy’s system seller; people were buying gameboys in droves just to play these games.
They could have been the only games on the system(they weren’t) and that would be enough for most people.

despite the poor coding and stupid design choices like link evolution and terrible move pool. These games have a lot of soul you can't say that about the new games.
gen 1 is more a open world than gen 8. I gen 8 it all a railroad but in gen 1 you could do what you wanted after the 3rd badge.
I would choose gen 1 any day over the lackluster 3D games

The third badge can entirely be skipped until doing the eighth as the only thing it gives you is access to fly. You can do what you want after the second one.

Gen 1 just feels incosistent with newer Pokemon gens imo.

In Gen 1 you had stuff like Mr. Mime or Jynx that were pretty much humanoid Pokemon.
Pokemon wearing human-made accesories like Machoke, Primeape, Meowth, Alakazam, Hypno, Poliwrath, Hitmonchan...
Pokemon that are based on ambigous animals lke Chansey, Ryhorn, Hitmons, Koofing, Kanghaskan, Magmar, Electabuzz...

While most modern pokemon are really just cartoonish animals.

I still play Blue every now and then, mostly because it's pretty easy to get through it in a few hours so I can do it in a weekend without having to sacrifice going out. The series has improved a lot since then, but I still like gen 1 too.

Well, back then there wasn't that much competition in the handheld gaming space, and Pokemon just happened to have been one of the better games for the only popular handheld back then. Pokemon was a big fish in a small pond. People wanted portable gaming; Pokemon at the time was one that brought bang to its buck. If Pokemon were first released.a few years later, or especially today, it would have been a lot less mainstream.

Yes, they are legitimately fun games. They lack most of the technical and QoL improvements of newer gens which may make them a chore to play if you're underage but the Pokémon designs are great, the region is not very linear and the glitches add a lot of replayability to the game. Not to mention Gen 1 has its own distinct charm that makes it a legitimate alternative to playing the remakes.

Pokemon is the only reason I bought the 3DS and Switch. At least the GBA and DS had a sizable portion of diverse titles. The 3DS and Switch do not (the Switch has a bunch of multiplats that are better on PC).

You mean when Pokémon came out? Because the 3DS had the basics too. Mario, Zelda, and Kirby were there plus Animal Crossing, a few Mario sports games, a couple of ports of big N64 games and plenty of 3rd party support. And that's without taking the entire DS library into account. Nintendo portables never really struggle with having games.
