It's meant to be a parallel to Pikachu.

And this isn't an adaptation of Sword/Shield anyway, the anime has stopped following the games and is its own thing now. Combined with it being confirmed that this will be an episodic series with little to new two-parters or arcs, it's unlikely that this will happen.

Last season they were marketing it as "Ash goes to school!" and they ended up putting in league shit anyway. Wouldn't be surprised if they did it again because people who have to get a job writing for the Pokemon anime probably aren't exactly the most skilled writers in the business.

So does this mean they'll cameo a bunch of old characters on top of Ash's Pokemon in the show? I might actually watch if that's the case, one of the things that really annoyed me about the show post-BW was that the show basically never had continuity anymore, and it's one of the things I really liked about DP. BW had a little arc where Ash brought back Charizard and he didn't even really get to do anything other than smack Iris's Dragonite around a little.

Nobody knows, we get old pokemon again but there's no info about old characters. It's all speculations by now.
