Is there an explanation in the Pokémon games on how a Pokémon learns a move from a TM

TMs are a game mechanic that don't actually exist in-universe

You just teach the Pokemon how to do the move yourself

I forgot to save the image, but an anon a while back brought up the rather good point that the button on a pokeball looks a lot like the center piece on a disc reader, and that the TM might be placed on that part of the ball and the data converted into knowledge or what not for the pokemon.

FRLG had an instructional dude and treated them like DVDs, putting them in a DVD case. I guess they gave up on giving players TV's or something. No clue otherwise.

I always thought of it as an instructional DVD. You watch a tutorial on how to breathe fire with your Pokemon and that's how they learn Flamethrower.

They're a game mechanic that most adaptations ignore for the more logical approach of Pokemon just learning any move in their movepool at random, or by seeing another Pokemon use the move and training to be able to use it themselves (i.e. Pikachu learning Iron Tail by seeing a Sentret use it, Swellow training to learn Aerial Ace after seeing Winona's Swellow use it).

They DO exist in-universe because characters give you them and talk about them, including Gym Leaders.

That's a good idea. It must be a sort of "matrix-style "I know kung-fu"" situation where they are uploaded the knowledge, because we already know Pokémon can be converted into data and digitized.

We know inside a Pokéball is a comfortable simulation for the Pokémon, so maybe the TM is played on a virtual screen in there?

In FRLG they made it seem like you slapped the TM on the Pokemon's forehead and it absorbed the knowledge.

I actually really liked this approach. Silly as it may be, it doesn't really need any special in-depth explanation, imo. Let them be little discs of human ingenuity-created magic. You can even justify their unlimited uses in later games by the manufacturer (Silph?) making technological advances.

Aren't pokémom partly digital anyway? They can be stored on a computer or inside a virtual space inside a pokéball. I assume you just upload the new move to your pokémon.

My idea is that all Pokémon are made of data (and not just Porygon), which is why they can me stored in the computer and learning moves is like downloading a floppy disc.

My headcanon has always been that a TM is a set of instructions for how to train your Pokémon to learn the move. That doesn’t explain why they were consumable in earlier games though.
