>>41645461Tl;DR: Sun/Moon, which was further reinforced by USUM and LGPE
For reference and I guess if it matters, I got into Pokemon during the very tail end of Gen 3 (in North America, at least, as my first game was Fire Red which I got a little while before D/P released here, from memory). I think the first time I ever felt truly disappointed in the series was when I was playing through Omega Ruby. Fire Red, Pearl, and Emerald were my main childhood pokemon games. They're the ones I hold the most attachment to (though now-a-days I prefer Plat over Pearl).
Anyways, I notably remembered the complete absence of the Trainer Hill on Route 111 as something that really stuck out to me. Even if I never fiddle around with it that much, as a kid, I still expected to see it sitting there. Same deal with the Battle Frontier. I didn't mess around with it much as a kid (was always more of a 'main story' type, replaying through again and again, though the Factory was cool and I messed around a lot with the Pyramid iirc) but I was really disappointed in Gamefreak for not including it, especially after I heard the reason for it. I went onto Sun/Moon and just felt....'meh' about it. I liked it because it was Pokemon, but I didn't enjoy it, and I ended up finishing it with a sour taste in my mouth even if ironically enough my now favorite pokemon is from gen 7 (pic related).
