We might be a Fairy Meowth next time.

Steel. Dark, and Fairy are the three new types added after the original generation. The past three Pikaclones are Fairy, Steel, and Dark, respectively. Meowth has Dark and Steel regional variants/forms. Fairy would be a safe bet for the next Meowth since GF likes to retroactively add Fairy to Gen 1 Pokemon via forms.

Why is Meowth such a shillmon now? I know he's always been sort of favored as one of the more marketable mons, but he's really hit levels of shill that only a very select few number of mons have ever had, like Pikachu or Charizard. He's never really seemed that popular in the US to me, and his only regular appearance for a long time was the anime. The games never really gave him any special attention before Gen 7.

Fairy seems the most likely, though I feel like they've kinda already used the premise for a Fairy Meowth variant in Alola (smug, crafty piece of shift bred by royalty). Dark would've made more sense with a scruffy alley cat form.

It's just that no one really minds that they shill Meowth. It's usually less in your face, and Meowth is unironically based.

Doesn't Meowth do evil for evil's sake, while the others are neutral most of the time, or on the revolving door of alignment?
Wario and Daffy can be greedy, and Shadow has always had memory problems.
Don't remember Meowth's backstory episodes off the top of my head, and don't remember him being good for anything other than a trap.

The TR Meowth learned to walk/talk/joined Team Rocket (for money) to impress a thot Meowth who later rejected himtwice.
Some of the Indigo League episodes I've seen that focus on Meowth tend to paint him as craving affection, and to be seen as a good guy even though he's bad. (Trying to be in good favors with Giovanni to replace his Persian, playing the hero for a preschooler, wanting to stay and protect a young medicine lady who cares for his wounds)
I have no clue how he's portrayed for the majority of the series, though.

Jessie and James were interesting as well when they aren't strictly comic relief.
James in particular is usually made out to be a good trainer, in that he genuinely cares about his pokemon.
