Assuming you're savescumming and datescumming (pastebin):

The gigantamax are pretty rare still. I got my first couple in like under 10 attempts, but gigantamax pokemon are about ~2% chance per datescum reroll on a purplebeam. So it takes a while if you're unlucky (max time for me: 9 months of attempts [about 270], shortest: 2 attempts)

I think GF might have been relying on people connecting to others hosting Gmax raids. The sheer amount of people using the internet can skew small percentages into large total numbers more often than you think. Obviously they undershot it still but if you bump rates up, the numbers can compound quickly.

It's a stupid low base chance if you're not the host, but the ball does make an effect.
it's like 3-5% base rate, and repeat ball is 3.5x the rate, which is still under 20% as the best rate for the non-host
