You start with 8 boxes, but you can get 16. I don't actually know how it goes from 8 to 16 but I remember that I was organizing boxes and once they were all filled (had a few Pokemon anyways) it expanded

The online sucks, the system that tells you there's a raid you can join sucks, and you can just use the exploit to get any raid you want. Since the host has a guaranteed catch there's even less incentive than normal to join in on other people's raids.

You can just save before the raid and keep trying as much as you want anyway so it's essentially a guaranteed catch in and of itself. People joining someone else's raid don't have that opportunity unless the host decides to be gracious and keep running the raid with no benefit for themselves aside from good karma.

Definitely not the same formula, though the Pokemon's individual catch rate probably factors in to some degree. It likely has something to do with the quality of the raid. G-Max Pokemon have notoriously low catch rates for anyone who isn't the host. It could just also be that guests have lower catch rates than hosts to avoid being able to get everything just by mooching.

There are certain thresholds you'll end up hitting that trigger the next round of shields to come up. But once that threshold is met you can end up blowing right through the shields and remaining health. It's not uncommon to see some raids end with the Pokemon still having some shields up.

If it's a rare spawn you're guaranteed to catch it but yes, as long as you save beforehand and have autosaves off then you can just reset and try again, the people who helped will have already had their chance to catch at that point. Whether they succeed or not makes no difference to the host.
