For a while it was pushing yourself to best a rival, then time-travel shenanigans, then Light/Dark worlds, then overcoming odds through teamwork in the 4-player co-op phase.
Right now it appears to be “keep overcoming obstacles until you get a chance to fight and defeat God.”
Pokémon, Zelda, Kirby, and Smash Bros have all kinda been front-runners with these themes—very dissimilar games in these franchises have followed several of the above trends within just a few years of each other.
Think less “one person’s master plan” and more “popular trends based on the whims of a few influential people.”
