I feel like the strong desire for asshole rivals is largely just wish fulfillment. I wouldn't be surprised if alot of pokemon fans were bullied in school as kids so being able to beat up jerks in their dog fighting simulator was atleast something.

I'd say Blue was sort of that balance. He taunts you, but he's still your friend and his conversations with you after the fights are usually in good terms and he often gives you hints. I still think that he's massively overrated and doesn't really have a character arc. Especially since that whole "you didn't respect your pokemon enough and that's why you lost" thing was never established before the end of the game. But I could see something like that working fine. Not that I mind the friendly rivals either. I like Hau.

He was just too pathetic in battle for me to take seriously. Before he gets kicked out, his entire team is just unevolved psychic types, while even Yell grunts just feet away from him have evolved Pokemon. He's incredibly easy to sweep, with minimal effort. Hop wasn't difficult ether, but I had to at least change up my attacks with him.
