Not everyone plays pokemon as a multiplayer game, but the series is made in such a way that the continuity of gameplay mechanics is apparent to anyone that plays generation after generation. For example, it doesn't make sense to keep IVs and also remove Contests. It doesn't make sense to have following pokemon in one game and not have it the next when the animations and code have already been done time and time again.
No one cares about not being able to fight Red or Giovanni every new generation, but most people care about not being able to use the same gameplay features they loved.
