Basically you and your rival are battling to become the top researcher by completing the pokedex. Your rival rushes through tje dex just catching mons but you are supposed to take more time and really research.
>amie is back and you get to see your pokemon interact with others similar to canp>there's picture areas (like alola) where you see pokemon in their natural habitats and can record unique behaviors and sometimes see rare pokemon>some pokemon like certain foods, grooming techniques etc> there would be slight gender differencesAll of these different avenues would fill up your dex with different sections.
You would have to battle type specialists to unlock rare habitats and new pokemon. They would pass on their knowledge to you and unlock near areas of the dex, sort of like an apprenticeship quest line.
Through out your journey you may find hints and glimpses of the legendaries and mythicals but this is for post game and requires searching ruins and finding chunk of lore to piece everything together.
