2 is comfy as fuck
5's sprites are really pixelated, but apart from that, I think that they look so much better than the static gen 4 sprites. Also has really great route map artstyle
6 is the fucking worst. Even ORAS looks worse than RSE

Gen 5 is by far the most hideous. The stretched sprites, faux-3d and horrible tweened animation are complimented by the overall bad monster design and art direction. Gen 4 has similar problems, but to a lesser degree. Otherwise, the series shows a pretty linear improvement from start to finish, but Crystal definitely has the most work put into its aesthetic.

Well gen 6 and 7 are already out of question for being 3D.

Personally, 5 had the best locales, followed by HGSS and Platinum. The sprites in 5 are ok, but really need some more polish.

Would you say they have the best looking maps too? I mean, do the environments look organic and atmospheric?

I never played other Gen 4 games, and I'm wondering if the modernized look made fr scratch looks better than a modern remake of an old game map.

It's hard to have natural looking environments when Gamefreak insisted on having grid trees.

They kinda spiced it up once in HGSS and a tiny bit in Gen5 but for the most part it was still ugly grid trees till gen6. And gen6 has way bigger problems...

Unironically Kanto, Hoenn and Sinnoh since they're the most thematically consistent and quality-wise too
I'm a huge Johto, Unova and Kalos fan but there were several quality gaps between Pokemon design/viability for example Tyranitar being a fucking monster in both design and performance and being in the same gen and game as Shuckle or Dunsparce who have both horrible design and stats
Or Unova which has great Pokemon like Darmanitan and Zoroark who are strong too and for some reason share the same gen as pure garbage like Shelmet

Gen 1 is nostalgia and nothing else
Gen 2 is the same except Crystal is actually the shit, with better animations than Emerald
Gen 3 is kinda funky, the last time anybody was off-model. I like it
Gen 4 introduces some awkward 3D that nobody needed
Gen 5 has fully animated sprites, but they get fucked by the 3DS's resolution along with every other sprite in the game. love the gameplay, but these are ugly games
Gen 6 is pointless
Gen 7 looked fine
Gen 8 looks the best almost by default, since it's Gen 7 but with a real resolution this time.

overall 8 > Crystal > Emerald > 4 > the rest

My ideal game would easily have to be something like Gen 5, with more attention to detail in every overworld area to avoid grid trees and ugly stuff like that, no camera angle changes, higher res battle backsprites, following pokémon sprites, tons of weathers hazards and grass types to make exploring fun, etc.

HGSS > DPPt > BW/2 > GSC > RSE > RBY > FrLg
Aesthetically:
HGSS' fucking grass > BW/2 > HGSS = GSC > DPPt > RBY = FrLg
Sprites:
HGSS > BW/2 > GSC = RBY > RSE > DPPt

Not counting XY and SM since I didn't play the latter and XY is not even worth mentioning. Honestly, BW2 is probably the most aesthetically pleasing 2D Pokemon game, but its held back by the awkward transition to 2.5D in a much more visible way that Gen IV is. HGSS' spritework really elevates these already aesthetically fantastic games to a level of quality that hasn't been achieved since. The colors are vivid, the overworld sprites are well-defined and detailed, and the Pokemon sprites feel dynamic and polished - which was my biggest problem with DPPt's Pokemon sprites. Even replaying Platinum after a decade, I can't shake the sensation I had on release that the Pokemon sprites were awkward - as if from mid-animation.

Gen III looks bad. DPPt's environments are interesting in concept but need polish visually. Gen II and I have a very particular feeling that's somewhere between charming and desolate; but II was such a step-up from I it's insane, and the spritework still holds up.

Oh and SwSh is so bland I actually forgot to mention it. Route 6 is very pretty, and the design around the gym challenge / stadiums / gym leaders is pretty great, but everything else is either unremarkable or actively bad.

gen 5's weird paper cutout animations didn't mesh well with the 240p resolution on the ds and led to it looking janky. If they just made animations for every pokemon it would have been better.
Gen 4 had lively poses and colors and looked great on the DS
