Gengar is iconic because it's actually a good design, while not a pokemon that was forced onto you or easy to obtain in the original games. I can just doodle it's face and some normie will call it out.

Charizard is the opposite where it was forced on you at the start so even people who didn't play the game much remembers it, it was just lucky to be more popular than the other two which doesn't say much because the gen 1 starters objectively aren't that cool anyway with a fat ugly flower frog, fat gun turtle which is kinda cool but what does that have on a dragon. Solidifying his place in the anime as well.

Cuz charizard was a shitmon for 5 gens in a row until megas made him usable for 2 gens. Only for swsh to cut megas out altogether and make him a shitmon again. His massive popularity is wholly unearned.

Gengar was OU for 5 gens until his mega made him Uber for 2 gens. Gmax Gengar isn't as good as his mega, but smogon discussions suggest that he'll still be OU in this gen. It's hard for people not to like a badass ghost that's also viable in competitive battles too. Well-earned popularity.

Gengar is not a choice between Pokemon, unlike Charizard getting special treatment from a choice of three starters where not everyone would choose Charizard.
Ghost is also a very interesting type, and he was the only fully evolved ghost for a while. Even when Misdreavus came out it wasn’t up to par with Gengar.
Plus, he had the best figure.

I never thought about it but ut's true. Gengar never really had any real competition as a ghost type until Chandelure. Dragonite was in a similar position but got cucked by Salamence and most subsequent dragons.

Gengar is one of the most shilled Pokemon from GF. Yes, you aren't obligated to catch it but most people end up doing that. Wanna know why? Hes shilled like crazy.

competitive is fucking aids, just the same dozen pokemon with the exact same moveset people rip off of smogon. i've been playing pokemon for 15 years and have not missed anything by not getting into competitive, despite sincerely trying to do so. battling random kids with 6 shiny legendaries is more important and stimulating than "competitive" battling

Gengar WASN’T shilled in the early gens. They barely talked about it or marketed it, back then there were very, very few Ghost-types (Gastly line being the ONLY ghosts in Gen 1) and they tried to keep the type mysterious and spooky. Also it was hard to obtain because you had to trade for it.
