They sucked because the camera was way too zoomed in, so you couldn't appreciate the whole route and they felt like going through a dark cave at times, not knowing what was ahead.

I have no idea how this adds anything to the experience. On the contrary, I think I prefer 2D and grid-based map design because of its mechanical feel. It feels nice.

Duh? Fishing is more involved and thus should yield better results than simple surfing. You don't deserve more than Tentacool and Wingull if you don't engage with fishing and diving.
