thats a result of GF using a much more cluttered soundfont than previous gens. They toned it down from gen 6 and 7, but its still a bit overwritten, leaving what could be a very compelling theme a mess that just sounds like "generic mean rival theme"

The composition is at fault. Sure a bad sounfont can ruin a music but if it's well composed, it will sound good/alright no matter what.
