Mark my words. The only way the Pokémon games can have any semblance of challenge is level-up caps on the gym badges. Not even full, itemized teams from the rivals and gym leaders can compete with over leveling. But even if GF actually implements that to turn the difficulty up a notch, you spergs will still chimp out about that because CHANGE BAD!

If you play through the game normally you'll end up underlevelled and have a decent challenge for a pokemon game. RPGs letting you waste lots of time overlevelling to trivialized encounters is a staple.

higher-leveled mons in the area past the gym/where you're supposed to be. you're fully allowed to explore it, but until you get the badge of the previous area, you can't capture any of them.
it's a compromisable roadblock.

If opposing trainers are limited on healing items then they should have a hard lock on it as well
I don't know how they'd justify it ingame though

No, fuck off with that. If you don't want people overleveling, maybe don't sell your game on an entire empty wasteland that lets you jump from level 10 to Level 45 in five minutes.

I don't think they NEED to lock it in-game, anyone who wants to make the experience harder for themselves can just avoid using it.

I personally throw those things away on purpose so the temptation isn't even a factor, and it works fine for me.

You can overlevel in literally any previous game easily, and specially HGSS and BW2, which are two of the very best games. Being overleveled has everything to do with your self control and zero to do with "b-but the game added EXP CANDIES so I HAVE TO USE THEM"

And in those games, the people also don't have an Exp. All they can't turn off that makes casually playing through the game lead to being 2-4 levels over every opponent.

I was similarly undelevelled just by only fighting trainers, getting first catches on most of what I saw, and swapping in a new team member every once in a while. No rotating shenanigans needed.

Please don't defend GF fucking up the level curve, or implementing terrible mechanics. In johto you could catch the legendary beasts at least 15 levels above the curve, but you only had about a 1% chance. The correct way for GF to implement over-leveled encounters was correct in the past: make it difficult but not impossible to catch high level pokemon, and have them disobey sometimes if you didn't have the right badge.

Literally all I did was fight all normal trainers I saw and I was never overleveled. Actualy found myself under leveled for two leaders and for Leon.

Take Etrian Odyssey, a series that's typically lauded as being difficult.
It has always active experience share that you can't turn off.
If you get to the first boss at level 10 doing the bare minimum encounters then you'll have a challenging time.
If you fuck around and get to the first boss at level 18 it'll just die.

Sword and Shield has the best level curve of any pokemon game, thanks to them finally designing around the experience share. If you follow the game you end up relatively underleveled. If you go out of your way to fuck with it you end up overleveled, as is usual.

Maybe you selected rock slide because it was a flying type so your EQ is useless, but point taken. However, they could reduce the chance of using any move in favor of the above two outcomes, making tyranitar nigh useless in battle but still allowing you to catch it.

There’s two things to consider. One is that exp share in that functions more like the old exp share that divvies the exp. two is that the majority of exp you get comes from quests and bosses so to over level like that would require obscene levels of grinding.

At the end of the day the game is balanced around the experience sharing and grinding expectation, just like sword and shield. Yet for some reason sword and shield gets "tons" (a couple autists on 4channel probably isn't tons) of complaints, most of them being flat out wrong.
