It was just fun and accessible when we were kids. So super casualised by definition.
I remember beating all the games without even knowing english when i was a kid.
Also let us not forget that beating a gym leader litterally requires you to just to catch what he is weak against.
Problem is GF casualised the game even more in the later games. So old fans have to go find other less casual games the new fans are instead not even little kids because the game is too expensive and everyone is playing fortnite.
I think the new fanbase is mostly adult and teen women though that might be my own experience since at uni the only people i have seen excited about a new pokemon game are some girls a really fat girl and a guy with a gay lisp.
Some other guys i know who regularly play rpgs and tabletop rpgs tell me that they used to play pokemon but these days they are more into more niche rpgs.
And that pokemon looks "boring as hell,slow with no flow in battle,simple to beat and it hasn't evolved past the first generations much"
