>>41691881Rock types are usually those Pokemon with bodies made partially or fully of rocks, minerals, crystals, etc. Think of dense elements of a wide variety that aren’t quite metallic since there’s the steel type for that. Fossils were all rock type in the past because fossils are mostly like hardened rock molds shaped by the skeletons of past life where the whole skeleton actually gets replaced by minerals over time.
Ground types are mostly Pokemon that can burrow, drill, and otherwise dig. That’s basically it, and it has its own type because these Pokemon taken to the extreme are the ones that will cause earthquakes, fissures, sandstorms, etc. Clay, mud, sand, and softer sediment are relegated to the ground type as well.
So yeah, a lot of rock types will be able to use ground moves or have tools to easily dig, and a lot of ground types are shown to use rock moves too. But you don’t have to have a rocky body to be a good digger so that’s largely why we have so many Earthy types when it’s mostly varying degrees of the same stuff.
