I don't understand why they didn't just re-use the plates. In fact, why not have the plates replace the type-boosting items as a whole? Having two sets of items that do the same thing is stupid.

Many were blind because it wasnt this bad now it makes every little wrong thing they did worse its the sonic 06 effect remember how adventure 1 and 2 were beloved look at them now give it enough time and all pokemon games are gonna have many issues that people look back on badly and gen 4 is gonna get hit hard i imagine

They do it this way because it's easier to program. Tying a single function to a single item is simple and doesn't require any interface changes. Making a whole new submenu for a key item? That would take work. When given the choice between player enjoyment and development ease, GF always picks ease.
