What the fuck happened to Ash in this new Pokemon season? He looks like the typical boring main character from a Shonen anime. Why the hell can he hike and jump at such high heights? I remember in Alola the only one who could do that was Lana, Ash always stumbled on everything and he was quite a funny character. Why the hell did they change his personality? I really liked the SatoGou interactions. Ash shouting over Go's aggressive need moments feels very in character of him. Aside of that, they seems to follow Killugon development but in a more basic way.

Even in just this episode, the two are still clearly in line with their character. Jessie, who doesn't care as much about Pokemon as James, just tells her Gyarados to use powerful moves while James actually calls out attacks. Plus the two show concern for their rentals which is also in character.

While I'd prefer them to have Pokemon with actual character like they did in SuMo, the Gacha will be infinitely better than them just using the same 2-3 mons with no personality like they did for BW and XY. At least this way we get to see them use different Pokemon and allows them to stay somewhat threatening as they aren't using the same Pokemon that get beaten every episode

I mean, its not like Jessie and James have ever had a coherent arc that wouldn't be possible in a more episodic story. I'm sure we'll get a least an episode or two focused on them as the writers seem to know how to use the characters are the disaster in BW. The only thing that will be different is that they won't have personal relationships with their Pokemon. While that is a shame, it isn't necessary to make the characters work.

The really weird thing to me is the existence of Wobuffet. A character that only existed to remove Lickitung has managed to survive years of the anime despite not doing much at all. Hell, he was literally removed for an entire generation but has come back since. His only purpose nowadays is to sit in the background and yell out his name occasionally. For a series that wants to use as little continuity as possible, Wobbuffet's continued existence is super weird

Its because while the series might try to distance itself as much as possible from its past continuity, the reason it can't is because fans new and old love that continuity. Old fans fondly remember it and newer fans voluntarily choose to learn it.
The Team Rocket trio is loved by fans and Wobbuffet fit right in as part of it from the moment it arrived.

Then its popularity grew from there, to the point that it became their secondary mascot and became very closely associated with them. Also, I think its downright retarded for the anime to not reference at least the Kanto portion of the series. I mean think about it; the Indigo League is the only series on Netflix along with the most recent, they just made a remake of the first movie that included all of Ash's old mons, another relatively recent movie heavily focused on Ash's Charizard, and Bulbasaur appeared in an episode of SuMo. Kids are definitely familiar with this era of Pokemon, so it seems really dumb for the modern series to rarely acknowledge it.

My specific point is about Ash's Pokemon. Since BW, we've only seen Bulbasaur, Charizard, Tauros, and Muk interact with Ash. Two of them are used for gags, Bulbasaur only makes small cameos, and Charizard hasn't been seen since the end of BW. If Ash doesn't use or even mention his old Pokemon in a series about revisiting past regions, then I think the future of the anime will only ever be limited to those four Pokemon despite the fact that kids would be undoubtedly be more interested in a Pokemon owned by Ash rather than a random wild Pokemon that never appears again. Obviously the series could still use Ash's Pokemon, but I'm hesitant to believe they will when an episode entirely focused on nostalgia barely referenced his old Pokemon and this episode made no references to Ash's Bulbasaur

People try to come up with rationaliations and copes for it, but the reason he left Greninja in Kalos and Rowlet, Incineroar, Lycanroc and Melmetal in Alola was just as an excuse to make sure they would essentially never return.

The Pokemon anime for whatever reason hates its own continuity. Maybe not everyone working on it, like perhaps an animator or two will get to put in easter eggs like his trophies, but they actively do whatever it can to avoid using its past as much as they possibly can ever since BW.

I'm aware that its unlikely, but I'll keep my hope alive until the 2019 series is over as this series is unquestionably the perfect time to bring back his older Pokemon. It could even fit how TR are using Gacha Pokemon; Ash could constantly be rotating his team to the point that the audience has no idea what he is using and their appearances could be solely for battles rather than character development. the 2019 series is really the last chance we'll have at seeing Ash's older Pokemon in any way.

For at least now, I'll keep most of my hope til the Frontier episode. If Ash is only using Pikachu in those battles, then I expect they might get a special like Brock and Misty got in SuMo at some point. If a year has past with no mention of his older Pokemon, then I'll expect a potential cameo or two by the end. However, if the series ends with no references, especially for the Alolan mons, and there isn't a big fan outcry like there was with Ash losing the Kalos League, then I think it will be the death of seeing Ash's older Pokemon in any meaningful way

Your optimism is something I do not share. I haven't really liked the direction things have taken since SM began and we had such drastic change. By now, Ash feels like hes a different character in many ways.
And when Ash left all his new Pokemon behind in Alola rather than take them with him, I knew then that for certain that they were only going to get wore.

We'll never get another kino moment like this ever again. We'll be lucky to see even a fourth of his old Pokemon ever again.

Give it a try. It's actually really nice. Sure, it's only three episodes into the new series and I could eat my words later on but I think it's a nice change of pace. The future will tell.

The thing I am worried about are the games, though. Dex cut being the obvious method to get micro transactions going + annual fee + keeping your 'mons hostage with Pokemon Home will be... quite interesting.

The only reason I'm remotely optimistic is for a few reasons
1. The nature of this series and returning to old regions is just the perfect set up for Ash's old mons
2. SuMo did have some callbacks, though they were primarily for human characters rather than Pokemon. This does show that the anime isn't trying to wipe away the older stuff like they were with early BW
3. The anime has been shown to listen to their fans on occasion. Fan outcry is why we got goofy TR back, why Ash won the Alolan League, and why we have any callbacks at all. If the fan outcry for Ash's older Pokemon is loud enough, then I think that it is possible the showrunners would listen

Like I said, its obvious to me that he left behind Rowlet, Incineroar, Lycanroc and Melmetal because its easier for them to never comeback that way.
